New public health building opens!

For students at UTHealth Houston School of Public Health, Aug. 31 will mark more than the start of a new semester. It will usher in a new era as they prepare to learn and connect in a newly constructed state-of-the-art facility designed with their education and future careers in mind.

The 10-story, 350,000-square-foot building at TMC Helix Park will give students a modern environment for learning, research and collaboration in the heart of the Texas Medical Center. With flexible classrooms, multipurpose student spaces, advanced technology and research laboratories, the facility is designed to support students as they prepare to tackle some of the most pressing public health challenges facing communities.

Students will learn beyond the traditional classroom through hands-on spaces, including a teaching kitchen, as well as research facilities supporting areas such as epidemiology, infectious diseases, genetics, health promotion and behavioral sciences.

The building will make it easier for students in the school’s Austin, Brownsville, Dallas, El Paso, and San Antonio locations to connect with peers and faculty through enhanced distance-learning technology.

Its location in Helix Park puts students at the center of a growing hub for healthcare, research and innovation. A skybridge will connect the School of Public Health to a nearby research center, creating additional opportunities to engage with researchers and collaborators.

For students, the new facility represents a chance to become part of the School of Public Health’s next chapter, continuing a nearly 60-year legacy of improving health through education, research and community engagement.

The building is more than a new home. It is a place where students will learn, collaborate, conduct research and build the skills to shape the future of public health.
